IS YOUR SALAD MAKING YOU FAT?

Salad blog

The year started and you are incorporating a salad in your meals

(just like Pri the health coach says.:))

But...  Let's go a little pass the greens and veggies in the salad. The

important question here is....WHAT IS THE DRESSING IN

YOUR SALAD ? If the answer is a rich creamy liquid, ingredients

you are not very sure what they are, we may have a problem here.

What a lot o people don't realize is that some salad dressing (a lot of

the ones you buy in stores that just seats on a shelf with long

expiration dates ) have equal or more calories and fat (not

the good kind of fat) than a juicy hamburger.

This is just an example of fat content. I'm not even comparing

protein, vitamins, and overall ingredients since it varies a lot.

2 tbsp of caesar dressing = 17 g of fat

120 g of hamburger = 17 g of fat

Yes, the greens, veggies and all the different beautiful color food are

the key for a healthy body and mind. And I believe we need them

everyday but let's be mindful on what are we adding to them.

What is my suggestion? It's simple.

Dress your salad with a dressing with just a few clean ingredients.

Here are some of my to go dressing ingredients:

Vinegar is the base of my dressing.

I use the most Balsamic, Red and Rice Vinegars and there are even other

options in the market.  All very low in calories and no fat!!

Olive Oil is my second ingredient.

When it comes to oil I prefer Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil , it does

contain fat, but is very important to mention the quality of the fat, and this

one is a winner in my books.

Lemon or Lime

Think of fresh flavor that your taste buds loves it! Rich in Vitamin C

and no fat content. I grew up in Brasil having a lime tree in my

backyard was a beautiful thing, so I still love to have lime in my

weekly shopping.

Sea Salt

I personally like just a little to enhance the flavor.

I am not going to say all salad dressing are fat with not so good

ingredients, there are some good ones out in the market. A great tip

is to look at the refrigerator isle for dressing.

So, knowing exactly what ingredients are in you dressing is always

the key. So next time look for the nutrition content and the

ingredients if there is too much fat, calories, sugar or ingredients that

doesn't look familiar you may not want to eat it, it goes not just for

the dressing but the other ingredients you may put in the salad too.

Because in the end, a healthy salad will give you the nutrients,

minerals, fiber and antioxidants for a healthy body and mind.
